The Department of English first launched its Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in English Programme for majors in 2012. It has been accredited by the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ) and is unique in Hong Kong as it strategically combines English Studies, Business Studies and General Education, with the objective of training students to adapt to a diverse range of situations and skills for the workplace.

The BA in English Programme has a team of experts in English literature, linguistics and language studies, all with PhD degrees from internationally renowned universities. The faculty members have experience teaching at overseas and local universities and are ready to provide students quality training in English studies.

The Department also offers English courses varying from academic English to business English to all University students. Working closely in collaboration with the English Language Centre, the Department of English strives to offer a rich and diverse English language learning environment to HSU students.

In March 2014, the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in English Programme obtained professional recognition from the Education Bureau (EDB) in the following areas:

  • The Programme is included in the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR) list of recognised English language major degree programmes;
  • The Programme is included in the list of “Programmes Accepted for Grants under the ProfessionalDevelopment Incentive Grant Scheme for Language Teachers”;
  • The Programme is accepted as an English language major degree for meeting the Language Proficiency Requirement (LPR) in Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking and Classroom Language Assessment.

Graduates from the Programme will be granted full exemption from LPR and deemed to have reached Level 3 proficiency in all papers in the LPR if they possess both a relevant degree and relevant teacher training (upon the completion of Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE)).
