Language Competency Requirement Related Courses

To provide support for students to fulfill the University’s language requirements, the ELC offers the following non-credit bearing courses to students:

ENG1000 English for University Studies

Adopting the blended learning approach, this module aims to coach students to apply grammar knowledge in analyzing spoken and written texts, which can improve students’ reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills at the university level. The online learning component consolidates students’ knowledge of grammar items and sentence structure for university study. It also offers online tasks to students to apply advanced grammar and syntax knowledge in communication on the micro- and macro-levels. Students will also be provided with opportunities to examine and refine their language use through small-group English language learning tasks in the classroom.

ENG2000

ENG2000 IELTS Preparation Course

This module helps students prepare themselves for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Examination. It assists students to familiarize themselves with the format of the examination by providing a range of practices for test-taking purposes.

ENG3000

ENG3000 University English for Senior Entrants

This pre-sessional English language module aims to provide additional English language support to Year 2 and Year 3 Senior Year Entrants for their study and for fulfilling the English language requirement in HSUHK. This module comprises an online self-study component focusing on accurate grammar usage and vocabulary expansion; and a face-to-face component on enhancing students’ English language skills. This module is compulsory for Year 2 and Year 3 Senior Year Entrants with an Associate Degree and Higher Diploma qualification unless they fulfil the exemption conditions.

ENG4000

ENG4000 English Proficiency Course

This English course is designed for students who are not able to meet the HSUHK language competency requirements upon their graduation. The course serves as an English enhancement course to help students lift their English standard prior to graduation. It strives to improve students’ four core language skills – reading, writing, listening and speaking.
