Whether you are a prospective student or someone who is interested to know more about the Department of English, welcome to our new website! Here you will find information about i) the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in English Programme, ii) the Master of Arts in Global English Literary and Cultural Studies Programme, iii) the English Language Teaching team, and iv) the English Language Centre. As the BA-ENG Programme Director, I would like to share with you our Programme’s unique strengths.
The Department has a lovely team of colleagues whose cultural and academic backgrounds are truly diverse. In the process of interacting with them, students are expected not only to learn how to improve their language skills but also how to think and behave in front of people with different values and of other cultures. Our research expertise covers a wide range of interests in English language and literature: Psycholinguistics, Semantics, Sign Language Linguistics, Postcolonialism, Political Novels, Ibsen, Gao Xingjian, Film Studies, Critical Theory, etc. The Department promotes a research-informed teaching environment. We encourage students to work with our colleagues on specific research topics through our capstone project, where students synthesize the knowledge they have learnt in the previous three years.
A supportive teacher-student relationship is at the core of the Department’s planning and development.
A supportive teacher-student relationship is at the core of the Department’s planning and development. Students are expected to meet their personal tutor, who is also a member of the teaching staff, at least once every semester. They are encouraged to seek advice on their studies, career planning, and other topics relevant to their experience at HSU. The Department organizes regular tea gatherings to facilitate communication between students from different cohorts and further academic exchanges outside the classroom.
I am excited to meet our new students every September. If you are interested to enrol our programme, please sign up for an interview here. You will be given the opportunity to meet our professors in person and understand more about the Programme. I hope you enjoy surfing these pages. If you have further questions that you cannot find an answer from this website, please do not hesitate to contact me at paulfung@hsu.edu.hk. All the best with your exams and life!
