The Department of English Launches Inaugural Journal: The Kaleidoscope Chronicle

The Department of English proudly announces the launch of its inaugural journal issue, The Kaleidoscope Chronicle. This publication marks a significant milestone in our academic and creative journey, coinciding with HSUHK’s 45th anniversary and the 150th year since the passing of Hans Christian Andersen.

Over a year in the making, Kaleidoscope began as a modest collection of student writings and has since evolved into a dynamic showcase of the department’s diverse voices.

“The word ‘kaleidoscope’ evokes images of ever-changing patterns in myriad forms and colours, while ‘chronicle’ brings a sense of record and permanence,” said Chair Professor Kwok-kan Tam. “The Kaleidoscope Chronicle, title of the journal, is an oxymoron producing multiple meanings combining the imaginary with the factual, while conjuring change, growth and development. It carries the Department’s aspiration for students.”

This special issue pays tribute to Andersen’s enduring legacy, featuring a wide range of creative works inspired by his fairytales. Readers will find original poetry, short stories, song lyrics from a musical on Andersen, and artworks—many of which were selected from student competitions held earlier this year.

 In addition to creative works, Kaleidoscope includes scholarly essays and reviews that explore Andersen’s stories through various critical lenses. Topics include cross-cultural comparisons with Chekhov and Blake, biographical analyzes, symbolic interpretations, and studies of contemporary adaptations. These contributions reflect the department’s commitment to literary scholarship and interdisciplinary inquiry.

“Readers can expect to encounter poignant narratives, insightful critiques, and innovative interpretations of classic texts, all addressing universal themes such as love, compassion, sacrifice, death and immortality, and human nature,” said Founding Editor and Editor-In-Chief Dr. Anna Tso. “We hope you enjoy this collection as much as we have enjoyed bringing it to life.”

With its rich variety of perspectives and genres, The Kaleidoscope Chronicle marks the beginning of a new platform for literary exploration and academic dialogue at HSUHK.

Founded by Dr. Anna Tso, The Kaleidoscope Chronicle focuses on literature, language, culture, and the creative humanities, celebrating the remarkable talents of our students and the vibrant community within the English Department. Each year, the Department of English forms a team to review and edit student essays and creative works submitted to the journal. This publication showcases the writing talents at the Hang Seng University of Hong Kong and is edited and produced by faculty members of the Department of English.

The e-journal will be registered with ISSN and DOI*, a credential that can significantly enhance our students’ writing career.

Business Idea Video Contest 2024-2025

Funded by the Department of English, the Business Idea Video Contest is a pitching competition targeted at all students enrolled in ENG3002 English for Professional Communication in academic year 2024-25. The contest seeks to showcase students’ skills in delivering a persuasive and compelling business pitch as a group. Based on a group assessment from the course, contestants are required to impersonate the role of owners of an existing and authentic business and simulate a pitch in front of a panel of university management with the aim of being chosen to operate their business in the Gallery on the 1/F of Creative Humanities Hub. 

The Competition took place on June 3rd at the Lecture Hall of Creative Humanities Hub. Four groups of contestants delivered convincing pitches after several weeks of research, preparation and training. The judges were impressed with the performances, in particular the teamwork they have demonstrated as well as how they handled Q&A session confidently.

Undergraduate and Postgraduate Conference 2025

The Undergraduate and Postgraduate Conference 2025 was held on 26 May 2025.

In Chinese mythology, it is believed that Houyi climbed over ninety-nine mountains, traveled through ninety-nine deserts, and shot down nine suns to relieve his people from an adverse plague of heat. The number “9”, therefore, signifies this familiar ambition to overcome the impossible, the stubbornness of grit, and a determined mind. In 2025, we welcome the 9th edition of the Undergraduate and Postgraduate Conference. Not unlike Houyi, our graduating cohort this year, evident in the high quality of dissertations they produced, has undoubtedly survived their own mountains, deserts, and suns.

To honour their toil, we are thrilled to gather the pool of ideas that emerge from this year’s graduating cohort in both our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Four projects from literary studies are featured in the Undergraduate session, which engages with D.H. Lawrence’s politics of abjection, Freudian approach to revenge in The Count of Monte Cristo, Dogville’s discussion on Arrogance in the lens of Brechtian theatre, and a comparative study of H.C. Andersen’s and Walt Disney’s The Little Mermaid. In addition to these, one linguistics project that investigates Singaporean and Hong Kong English is also featured in the undergraduate session.

Not only do the undergraduate papers showcase a diverse array of topics, our postgraduate students also reflect the breadth of knowledge and the spirit of creativity within HSUHK’s academic community. In the afternoon session, we present three literary and cultural studies projects, which include a psychoanalytic and narrative study of Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s The Yellow Wallpaper, a biographical approach to Andersen’s The Ugly Duckling, and  a study of the Indigenous Land Rights and Sustainability in the Philippine Cordillera Highlands. In a parallel session, we also celebrate two linguistics studies that examine the implications on English language teaching through Complexity Dynamic Systems Theory and formative assessment mechanisms.

We concluded our conference with Dr. Anthony Huen’s (HKU), a local and award-winning poet, who has generously delivered a keynote speech on his recent work.

It is our hope that the UG-PG conference will become a place where our students and other researchers can meet annually to share the developments of their work in a friendly and professional environment. Huge congratulations to the presenters who have successfully made their debut as an HSU scholar!

Young Talent Shines in Voices of the Silver Screen Music Video Competition

The Department of English is excited to share the remarkable success of the Voices of the Silver Screen Music Video Competition. This engaging initiative challenged primary and secondary school students to reimagine iconic film soundtracks through original music videos, combining creativity with English language learning.

The competition attracted a diverse array of impressive submissions. Entries were evaluated based on creativity and originality, vocal performance, and English pronunciation.

In conjunction with the 150th anniversary of the passing of the world-renowned Danish fairy tale writer Hans Christian Andersen, our inaugural issue will celebrate the legacy of his fantastical and timeless fairy tale characters.

Be it the famous Ugly DucklingThe Snow QueenTheLittle Mermaid, or The Emperor’s New Clothes, we welcome all types of papers and creative works inspired by Andersen, as listed below:

  1. Academic Writings
  • Essays: must be original articles relevant to Hans Christian Andersen and/or his works. The essay should be 5,000 to 6,000 words in length.
  • Reviews: must be original reviews on Andersen’s tales, adaptations, and/or retellings. The review should be 1,500 to 2,000 words in length.
  • Acceptable formats include student essays or project papers.
  • Follow the MLA documentation style.
  1. Creative Works
  • Fractured fairytales: Create a new fairytale in the style of Andersen or provide an alternate version of one or more of Andersen’s original tales, incorporating modern themes and thoughts.
  • Poems: Choose a character from Andersen’s works and write a poem from his/her perspective
  • Others: Besides literary articles, we also welcome submissions of video essays, short stories, translations, cartoons, illustrations, photographs, or any other works.

What are the incentives of the open call?
All selected writers will receive a complimentary copy of the beautifully printed journal. The e-journal will be registered with ISSN and DOI*, a credential that can significantly enhance your writing career. Your work will also be included in the permanent collection of the HSU library database.

How can I submit my work?
Submit your work(s) to engjournal@hsu.edu.hk by 17:00, 14 April 2025. Late submissions will not be accepted.

Please indicate your submission category, student number, name, degree programme and School in your email. If the works are in textual format, we will accept Word documents only. If the works are in images, we will accept JPEG files no larger than 3 MB.

Who will be reviewing my work?
All submissions will be reviewed by the editorial board of “The Kaleidoscope Chronicle,” which consists of teaching staff from the ENG faculty.

When will I be notified of the submission result?
All selected works and unsuccessful submissions will be notified in the week of 14 April 2025.

Seminar 1: Andersen’s Fairy Tales: Beyond the Childlike Wonder Time

Guest Speaker:  Dr. Maria Chan (Senior Lecturer, Hong Kong Shue Yan University)

Abstract
Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales, including The Little MermaidThe Ugly Duckling, and The Emperor’s New Clothes, are often classified as children’s literature. Their magical elements, imaginative worlds, and moral lessons seem perfectly suited for children. However, beneath this childlike wonder, these tales also resonate strongly with adults, offering darker themes, existential questions, and critiques of human nature.

This seminar examines how Andersen’s works transcend their surface simplicity to engage both children and adults. For children, his stories provide accessible language, enchanting worlds, and clear ethical lessons. For adults, they reveal emotional and thematic complexity, such as the tragic sacrifices in The Little Mermaid and the biting satire of The Emperor’s New Clothes. By exploring the layers of meaning in Andersen’s fairy tales, we uncover why they continue to captivate and challenge readers of all ages.

Bio
Dr. Maria Chan is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of English Language and Literature at Hong Kong Shue Yan University. She obtained her Doctor of Education degree from the University of Hong Kong. Her research interests include modern fiction, drama from Eastern and Western traditions, and Renaissance and Neoclassical literature.

 

Seminar 2: Reimagining Witches: A Comparative Study of Witch Depictions in Modern Chinese Adaptations of Andersen’s The Little Mermaid

Guest Speaker:  Dr. Kacey Liu (Associate Professor, Hong Kong Shue Yan University)

Abstract
Since the late Qing and early Republican periods, when Andersen’s works were introduced to the Chinese audience, fairy tales have gained popularity and acclaim among readers in China. Presently, numerous adaptations and retellings of Andersen’s narratives abound. This study delves into the depiction of witches in contemporary Chinese adaptations of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid. By examining the portrayal of witches in these adaptations, the research compares modern renditions with the English version of Andersen’s tale and its early Chinese translation, “海的女兒” as translated by Ye Junjian (葉君健) in 1956. Ye’s version is directly translated from Denmark and has been recognized as an authoritative and excellent translated version. Through a comparative analysis of modern adaptations alongside the original English and the Chinese translation by Ye, this study argues that the representation of witches has undergone demonization to suit the sensitivities of contemporary young readers.

Dr. LIU Jianwen (Kacey) is an Associate Professor in the Department of English Language and Literature at Hong Kong Shue Yan University. She holds a Ph.D. in Gender Studies/Translation Studies from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Her research interests focus on gender and language, picture book translations, gender-based translation studies, and corpus-based translation studies.

Abstract
The nature of language, its representation in the mind-brain of humans, and how language is processed and acquired should constitute the backbone of all language and teacher-education programmes. The lack of language experts teaching in these programmes has often led to the perpetuation of misleading beliefs about language and language teaching. For example, the belief that language is a list of rules, such as those found in textbooks and that ‘knowing a language involves knowing its rules’. Perhaps one of the more critical sets of consequences of non-expertise in language and language acquisition involves a lack of understanding about how language develops over time. Some of the myths perpetuated include that teaching grammar explicitly and error correction is necessary or even beneficial, that first-language transfer is the source of all learning problems, and that adults learn languages differently from children, among many, many others. In this talk, the main consequences of the lack of experts and expertise in providing appropriate language teacher training will be discussed and several possible solutions highlighted.
 
Bio

Alessandro is a scholar in the field of second language acquisition research with an interest in two distinct areas: (i) the theoretical framework known as Input Processing, and particularly its pedagogical model Processing Instruction; (ii) the empirical research on the effects of formal instruction (focus on form) on the acquisition of linguistic properties in several romance and non-romance languages. His research on Processing Instruction has been recently driven using new online measurements (e.g., eye tracking, self-paced reading).

The Department recently organized an engaging event titled “The Fairytale World of H.C. Andersen” (安徒生的童話世界) to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the renowned Danish author Hans Christian Andersen. This initiative aimed to explore the themes within Andersen’s beloved fairy tales and their relevance in today’s world. 

 

Media Coverage

The event received significant media attention, with Ming Pao Daily News covering the story in their education section. The article, titled “恒大辦活動「重讀」安徒生 學生代入「醜小鴨」:故事不止教別以貌取人,” detailed the activities and the students’ reflections on the story’s lessons. 

LAM Winola Wai-larm, a third-year student in the Department of English, shared her reflections on the story, highlighting its message about not judging others by their appearance. She expressed how the tale resonated with her personal experiences, emphasizing the importance of understanding and self-discovery.
