DEPARTMENTAL SEMINAR SERIES 2026/27
How does a writer develop a sense of place? And how does a place find its way into writing?
To kickstart the new academic year’s Departmental Seminar, we are delighted to invite Ms Nicolette Wong, the Guest Editor of the upcoming issue of the departmental journal The Kaleidoscope Chronicle, to give us a seminar and a creative writing workshop around the theme of the journal this year: Soundscapes of Hong Kong.
In this seminar, Hong Kong writer, editor, and creative writing teacher Nicolette Wong reflects on the ways the city has shaped her literary practice. She will talk about her interest in capturing a sense of place in writing, through memory, language, observation, sound, and the details of everyday life. Drawing on her experiences of working with students, Nicolette will also discuss how young writers develop their creative practice and find their voices.
In the creative writing workshop, students will be invited to revisit familiar places and consider how they might bring them to life in writing. As guest editor of the upcoming issue of HSUHK’s Department of English journal, The Kaleidoscope Chronicle, Nicolette will explore the theme of “Soundscapes of Hong Kong” with students, and encourage them to transform their experiences into creative work.
The seminar and workshop are closely connected and participants are most encouraged to join both, but it is also fine to attend only one session.

About Nicolette Wong
Nicolette Wong is a writer, editor and translator from Hong Kong. She is the author of the poetry collection Stone Bridge Madrigals (corrupt press, Paris), and her prose and poetry have appeared in various international publications. She has edited two literary anthologies of Hong Kong writing in English, Making Space and Looking Back at Hong Kong, published by Cart Noodles Press, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. She is the chief editor of A-minor Magazine, an online journal that features prose, poetry and artwork.
She was the former writer-in-residence of the Masterclasses programme at the Department of English, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, where she taught creative writing courses for undergraduate and secondary school students.
